Brendel makes history at the World Championships

Canoeing star Sebastian Brendel excels in his favourite event of 1,000 metres at the Canoeing World Championships in Portugal and adds to his collection of gold medals.

Following his previous triumphs in 2014, 2015 and 2017, Sebastian Brendel secured his fourth World Championships gold medal in succession at the Canoeing World Championships in Portugal on the final weekend of August. In his favourite 1,000-metre event, the canoeing star burst to the front with a perfect start. His rivals had to watch on helplessly as he crossed the finish line in first place, with almost a full boat length between him and his long-standing rival Martin Fuksa.

With this, Brendel wrote himself into canoeing history. He is the third canoeist to win four World Championships titles in succession over this distance.

In addition to the 1,000 metres, Brendel also took part in the non-Olympic disciplines of 500 metres on Friday and 5,000 metres on Sunday, putting himself up against the world’s best canoeists. The Potsdam native took home the silver medal in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal, on Friday. He gave everything in the final sprint of the 500-metre event, even flipping over at the end. However, the Brazilian Isaquias Queiroz refused to let up, forcing Brendel to settle for the silver medal.

Brendel took on the marathon 5,000-metre race on Sunday, where the defending champion was bidding for his tenth World Championships gold in total.

A very impressive display by the 30-year-old two years before the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

European Championships in Belgrade

Sebastian Brendel initially had to make do with winning two silver medals in the 500- and 1,000-metre races in mid-June at the European Championships in Belgrade. However, the long-distance canoeist managed to conclude the championships by confidently defending his title as European champion from the previous year.

Sebastian Brendel takes third place in the ICF Canoe World Cup

This year’s ICF Canoe World Cup took place in Duisburg on 25-27 May. Over 600 participants lined up on the Wedau course in the hope of securing World Cup points. Sebastian Brendel took part in the C1 event over 500 metres and 1,000 metres.

The World Cup weekend got started on Friday morning with the 1,000 metre heats, with the semi-finals and final following on Saturday.  The 500 metres heats were also held on Saturday afternoon, with the semi-finals and final on Sunday. Mr Nolte, managing director of GO! Express & Logistics (Deutschland) GmbH and Mr Sacher, from the management board of GO! Berlin, were on hand supporting the professional canoeists.

Sebastian Brendel secured the bronze medal in both races. ‘It could have been a little closer for my liking. The others were a long way out in front. But there’s a long season ahead,’ said Brendel to the news channel rbb24.

We wish the Olympic champion the best of luck and hope that he will keep getting the results he needs in the run-up to the European Championchip in June.

2. Rankings regatta: Brendel triumphs again

After a strong start to the season in mid April, Sebastian Brendel once again secured the top spot on the podium at the German canoe racing World Championships qualifications finals on the first weekend in May. The three-time world champion from 2017 won both the 500-metre and 1,000-metre men’s canoe doubles.

We congratulate Sebastian Brendel on this great achievement!

Strong start to the new season for Brendel

In the first national qualification race for this year’s World Championships, Sebastian Brendel secured first place in the C1 event over 2,000 metres with a winning margin of 9.5 seconds.

On the short course over 250 metres, the Olympic champion came second behind C4 world champion Stefan Kiraj. This marks a satisfactory start to the 2018 canoeing season for Brendel.

We wish him the best of luck in his preparations for the upcoming qualification races and championships.
