GO! Express & Logistics in research partnership with the Max-Planck Institute

Initial data collection on CO2 efficiency in the CEP sector

Bonn. GO! Express & Logistics has been supporting the Max-Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI) as a partner in its current study of CO2 efficiency in goods transport by road. In the NESTOR project the MPI analysed CO2 emissions and efficiency measures in domestic heavy goods vehicle transport until 2004. In 2005 this work became the basis for the NESTOR 2 study, which analysed energy consumption and efficiency in the CEP sector. GO!, as the exclusive research partner, made available to the study its knowledge of the industry and transport data related to CEP traffic.
Ralf-Hans Dierks, CEO of GO! General Overnight Service (Deutschland) GmbH, says of the cooperation: "We are really pleased to have taken part in the project. We are constantly testing and applying a range of measures to make our courier trips as efficient as possible – for both ecological and economic reasons. And now we have been able to take a direct part in the relevant research."
With the NESTOR study, project manager Dr. Jacques Leonardi was entering on new territory. "In the whole of Europe there were no research results which we could have used as a basis. This means that NESTOR provides for the first time a relevant database for the efficiency of specific industries with regard to our CO2 emissions", explains the scientist.
The results of the study, which was sponsored by the federal ministry for education and research (BMBF), are now available and were presented on 8 December 2005 as part of a workshop in Cologne. On the basis of these results CEP companies can now develop their individual optimisation measures, is how Leonardi stresses the relevance of the data: "After all, CO2 emissions are directly related to fuel consumption. Every tonne of CO2 which is saved will in the end mean fuel savings. Increasing this efficiency can be the key for participants on the market, because any company which transports more goods while at the same time reducing emissions will not just be driving more sustainably but also more economically."
The efficiency of the journeys made in the CEP sector is, according to the scientists, already extremely high. In individual transport sectors there is, however, considerable potential for optimisation, and targeted measures can significantly improve fuel efficiency.
For the Max Planck institute the cooperation also proved an enrichment: "GO! proved to be an ideal partner in this. The excellent cooperation made it possible for us to obtain the results within a short period of time ", emphasises Dr. Leonardi.
